More than a massage – a complete tissue nourishment

Njavarakizhi is a unique Ayurvedic therapy where warm boluses of specially prepared Njavara rice (a unique variety) are gently massaged over the body. At Ayurharsha, we follow the precise method handed down by our grandfather Dr. Lakshmaiah Sharma, using herbs and milk decoctions that penetrate deep into the muscle layers.

Nourishes muscles

The warm rice boluses are rich in proteins and herbal properties. They strengthen skeletal muscles, reduce wasting, and improve tone – ideal for paralysis and post‑stroke recovery.

Strengthens nerves

The gentle pressure and warmth soothe vata‑related nerve disorders, reduce tremors, and enhance sensory‑motor function. Many patients report improved mobility after a course.

Rejuvenates joints

Njavarakizhi pacifies both vata and pitta, making it excellent for arthritis, sports injuries, and stiffness. The rice boluses provide deep lubrication without inflammation.

Overall vitality

Regular sessions build ojas (life essence), improve skin texture, and induce sound sleep. It is a true rasayana for the musculoskeletal system.

Your Njavarakizhi journey at Ayurharsha

1

Preparation of the rice

Njavara rice is cooked with a specific herb decoction (often bala, ashwagandha, or dashamoola) and milk until it forms a soft pudding. Two therapists prepare fresh boluses for the session.

2

Warm bolus massage

The warm rice bundles are dipped in warm medicated milk and gently massaged over the body in long strokes on limbs and circular motions on joints. Two therapists work in synchrony.

3

Rest & absorption

After the massage, you rest for 20–30 minutes covered in a warm sheet, allowing the rice essence to penetrate. A herbal steam may follow to enhance absorption (optional).

Duration: 60–90 minutes | Recommended in a series of 7, 14 or 21 days for deep tissue rejuvenation.

“My grandfather used Njavarakizhi to rebuild the strength of patients who had lost the ability to walk. He would say: ‘the rice carries the memory of the earth – let it remind your muscles how to be strong’.
