Kizhi (or Pottali Sweda) is a powerful sudation therapy where muslin bags filled with medicated herbs, leaves, rice or powders are heated and rhythmically applied to the body. At Ayurharsha we prepare each bolus fresh, following the exact proportions handed down by Dr. Lakshmaiah Sharma.
The herbal heat penetrates stiff joints, reduces vata accumulation and soothes arthritic pain. Ideal for knee, shoulder and back stiffness.
Anti-inflammatory herbs in the bolus (like nirgundi, rasna, eucalyptus) calm swollen tissues and improve mobility.
Rhythmic tapping with warm pouches releases chronic muscle spasms, post‑sports soreness and fibromyalgia.
Induces sweating, opens channels (srotas) and flushes out metabolic toxins – a true swedana therapy.
Fresh herbs (vacha, dashamoola, nirgundi) are coarsely ground, mixed with rice or powders, tied in muslin cloth and gently warmed in medicated oil.
The therapist dips the warm bolus in oil and massages with tapping, kneading and circular strokes. Two boluses are used alternately to maintain constant heat.
After the session you rest for 20–30 minutes to allow the herbal essence to absorb. A warm water bath is advised later to prolong the effect.
Duration: 45–60 minutes | Typically given in a series of 7, 14 or 21 days for chronic conditions.
“My grandfather used to say: the kizhi should speak to the muscle. The warmth, the pressure, the herb – all must be just right. We still prepare every bolus as he taught: with fresh herbs and bare hands.
— Dr. Sambasiva Rao Peteti (3rd generation)
An initial consultation with Dr. Sambasiva ensures the right herbal blend and pressure for your condition. He will also advise on combining kizhi with other therapies.
