More than drinking ghee – a controlled therapeutic process

Snehapanam is the internal administration of medicated ghee over several days. It is the essential first step (poorva karma) of Panchakarma, yet it can also be a standalone therapy for pitta and skin conditions. At Ayurharsha, we prepare the ghee exactly as Dr. Ramamurthy standardised – with precise herb ratios and puta counts.

Deep detoxification

Flushes pitta and kapha toxins from the gastrointestinal tract, liver and blood. Ideal for chronic skin diseases, hyperacidity and recurrent headaches.

Skin & blood purification

Clears psoriasis, eczema, urticaria and other pitta‑dominant skin conditions by removing ama from the rakta dhatu (blood tissue).

Rejuvenates digestive fire

Strengthens agni without aggravating pitta. The body becomes light, yet well‑nourished – a sign of proper oleation (samyak snigdha lakshanas).

Balances pitta & vata

While primarily pitta‑reducing, snehapanam also lubricates deep tissues, making it valuable for vata disorders like gout and certain arthritic conditions.

Your Snehapanam journey at Ayurharsha

1

Pulse diagnosis & dosage

Dr. Sambasiva examines your nadi and agni to determine the exact quantity and type of ghee (e.g., Tiktaka for pitta, Mahtiktaka for skin, or plain ghee for vata).

2

Graduated intake

Over 3 to 7 days, you consume increasing amounts of warm medicated ghee – always with prescribed vehicles (ushnajala, etc.) and under supervision.

3

Observation & transition

When proper signs appear (soft stool, lightness, clear skin), the therapy is complete. For Panchakarma, virechana follows immediately; as a standalone, a specific diet is given.

Duration: 3–7 days | Usually done early morning on an empty stomach.

“My grandfather considered snehapanam the most delicate of all purifications. His diaries describe 14 different ghee preparations for different conditions. Today we still follow those exact formulations – each batch is cooked for 36 hours.

— Dr. Sambasiva Rao Peteti (3rd generation)

Snehapanam is especially known for:

  • Psoriasis, eczema & urticaria
  • Chronic hyperacidity & gastritis
  • Gout & rheumatic complaints
  • Repeated headaches / migraine
  • Preparation for Virechana (purgation)

How many days does it take?
Typically 3 to 7 days, depending on your agni and the condition being treated. For Panchakarma, it is usually 5–7 days.
Is it safe for everyone?
Snehapanam should only be done under vaidya supervision. It is not for those with weak agni, diarrhoea, or certain acute conditions.
